People Can Change
People don’t change. I used to believe that was true.
Then life threw me a major curve ball a few years ago. Little by little, bit by bit, moment by moment… I have changed. New truth. People can change.
You can’t change anyone. I still believe this is true. More than ever before.
Spending too much time thinking about what others should or should not be doing, saying, thinking is the root cause of most of the stress in our lives. My non-scientific estimation is that 99% of the population suffers, operative word, from the fantasy that they can change others.
Everyone Has Their Own Journey
Suggesting/pushing/pleading with anyone to see it “our way”, or do what “we suggest”, or say it “like this” – is a colossal waste of our energy. Over the years, I’ve spent umpteen kilowatts of energy trying to change others. Not strangers either – those closest to me. I can boast a zero success rate.
I use a little familiar saying in my Mindfulness workshops – Mirror, Mirror on the Wall. It’s a simple reminder to quickly grab a mirror when you find yourself focusing in on what someone else is doing. It’s a very visual reminder that you can only change yourself. And what do you say to that pretty/handsome facing looking back at you?
“I have a spectacular journey of my own to focus my energy on. I will live in the faith that everyone will find their own way, in their own time. I release my desire to change others.”
